After intense pressure, on April 16, 1862, the U.S. Congress freed enslaved
persons living in Washington, DC nine months before the famous Emancipation
Proclamation. How did this happen and what does it mean to us today? Is DC
truly free - or are we first freed, but last free? Three dynamic speakers will
answer those questions from three unique viewpoints:
1) Acie Byrd, Jr., political scientist, Pacifica Radio/WPFW-FM and DC
statehood advocate, gives the facts from the past to the present;
2) Muriel Martin, history professor at Dunbar Senior High School, and long-
time statehood advocate discusses youth and teaching DC history;
3) Ladd Everitt - President, District of Columbia Million Mom March, tells how
the assault on DC's gun ban shows our continuing lack of real freedom;
4) Ayo Handy-Kendi, president and founder of the African American Holiday
Association, presents a dramatic slave re-enactment and a way to address
wholistically "post-traumatic slave syndrome".
