"Our Community Fights for a Warrior Who Has Fought for Us"
The Spirit of Hope Campaign & Friends and Family of Damu Smith Present A Fundraiser and Evening of Tribute for DAMU SMITH
Saturday, July 9, 2005 6:30-10 p.m. Cramton Auditorium/Howard University, Washington, D.C. Featuring spoken word/reggae/jazz/neo-soul/hip-hop and more! One of the most principled and sacrificing among us has fallen gravely ill. The Spirit of Hope Campaign is a grass-roots, volunteer effort to help our brother/warrior/friend, Damu Smith wage the battle of his life against colon cancer. His treatments are estimated to cost more than $400,000. For over 30 years Damu has been a passionate and tireless human rights, environmental justice and peace activist, and prolific grassroots organizer. He is former executive director of the Washington Office on Africa, National Associate Director of Greenpeace USA, and Associate Director of the American Friends Service Committee's Washington Bureau. He is currently executive director of the National Black Environmental Justice Network (NBEJN), the first ever national network of African American environmental justice activists, and founder of Black Voices for Peace (BVFP). Damu has worked tirelessly to help scores of poor and communities of color across the U.S. fight toxic exposure and environmental racism. Through the founding of BVFP, Damu has helped mobilize the black community to speak out against the unjust war in Iraq and take the stand that the billions of dollars the Bush administration is spending on the global U.S. military network, war against Iraq, and support of the Israeli government’s occupation of Palestinian land is money that should be spent on universal healthcare, education, jobs, housing, environmental protection, reparations, and other human needs here at home. COME PARTY WITH A PURPOSE! Please join the Spirit of Hope as we give back – as we honor Damu and all he has done to make the world a safer and healthier place – and as we expose the health injustices that are rampant in this country!
