JOIN STAND UP! AND the ACLU of the National Capital Area and others for
a Democracy for DC rally on Thursday, September 15, 2005, from 5:30 to
8:30 PM on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol to protest congressional
interference in local issues and DC's denial of voting representatation
in Congress.
Congress has, over the years, imposed its will on DC by attaching
riders to the DC Appropriations Bill, which, in effect, limits the DC
government from
determining how its own budget should be allocated. Once again through
the appropriations process, Congress is limiting the DC budget and
stripping DC
residents of their right to spend their local tax dollars their own way, this time with regard to gun safety laws.
Such action in the past has resulted in limitations on HIV/AIDS
prevention measures, domestic partnership policies and reproductive
rights, to name a few.
To make things worse, this type of interference goes on while Americans
living in the 'capital of the free world' do not even have
representation in Congress.
The ACLU is taking the lead in protesting this national disgrace. The
schedule of events for the evening of Thursday, September 15, 2005, is
as follows:
* 5:30 PM - Music and entertainment begins;
* 7:30 PM - Candlelight march around the Capitol
Building begins For more information on the rally, visit the ACLU- NCA
