The Black Family Reunion Celebration is a two-day cultural event that
is recognized as the largest, most significant family event in the
nation, attracting more than 500,000 people each year. The festival
celebrates the enduring strengths and traditional values of the African
American family. Some of the themed pavilions include the Children’s
Pavilion, Health Pavilion, Sports & Fitness Pavilion, Education
Pavilion, Economic Empowerment Pavilion, Spirituality Pavilion, Women’s
Health and Day Spa Pavilion, Fathers, Sons & Brothers Pavilion,
Family Values and the National Council of Negro Women’s Pavilion. It is
a fun-filled weekend with live music, ethnic foods and a International
Arts and Crafts Marketplace.
The Mission In 1986 the black family was under attack in the
media. In response to significant negative projections of a
“disappearing” and “disintegrating” black family, Dorothy I. Height,
Chair of the National Council of Negro Women, developed an idea for a
positive culturally-based event that would celebrate African Americans’
historic strengths and traditional values.
The Method
Saturday features an Opening Ceremony, all-day themed Pavilions which
showcase celebrities, prominent experts, performing artists and product
promotions. Saturday closes with an evening R&B Concert in
the Park. Sunday features all-day themed Pavilions and closes with an
evening Gospel Concert in the Park.
