From Anise Jenkins, our President:
Hi!
Although Stand Up!'s mission statement is on the basic flier, I thought those
who have not would like to see the complete mission statement along with the
original "protests" formulated by Stand Up! in March of 1998 (Stand Up!
officially met as Stand Up! in August 1997). In July of 1997, Congress (under
the impetus of then Sen. Lauch Faircloth (R-NC)) had taken all power from the
local government except parks and recreation - the Financial Control Board had
already been put in place in 1995). The document reveals a great deal about
the original intent of our organization and subsequent actions.
Mission Statement:
To obtain full democracy for all residents of the District of Columbia with
equal rights under the Constitution and Human Rights consistent with
international law, and to promote good governance for the welfare of the people.
We Protest...
* Stripping democracy from the District of Columbia residents.
* Taking power from our elected officials including the District of Columbia
Delegate, the Mayor, the District of Columbia Council and the Board of
Education.
* Imposing the Control Board, the Chief Financial Officer, the Emergency
Transitional Education Board of Trustees and the Chief Management Officer.
* Taxation without representation.
* Denying our right to tax all income earned in the District of Columbia.
* Ending the federal payment, which partially compensated the District of
Columbia for use of its services and for tax exemptions on property and non-
profits.
* Changing the District of Columbia criminal code without the consent of the
governed.
* Interference in our local affairs, local laws, and local finances.
* The disregard of our long-standing petition for Statehood.
