Ten Years and Still Standing!

Ten Years and Still Standing!

Stand Up! For Democracy in DC Coalition will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Carnegie Library from 6 pm – 9 pm! Ten years in the age-old struggle for equal civil and human rights in some ways is but a pebble on the sandy beach or that tiny drop in the vast ocean. But for those who participate in some way, ten years is a significant part of their lives. One can look back to 1997 and remember the righteous indignation the people of Washington, DC felt when the U.S. Congress took all powers away from our democratically elected local government. The rallies, the protests, the organizing meetings, the arrests for civil disobedience do not seem so long ago. The people who filled 13 buses that traveled down to North Carolina to help defeat the dictatorial former Senator Lauch Faircloth (R-NC) will never forget that ride or the pride they felt when his opponent claimed victory.

DC residents pay more federal taxes per person than any state in America, 5 DC residents have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan with more severely injured. Our constitutional demand continues to be statehood which means full voting rights in the U.S. House and Senate, control of our own local budget, courts, prisons and laws – an end to Congress’ control of our destiny. As statehood continues to be our mission with the 51st star as our goal - we will take time on Friday, October 19, 2007 to thank all those who remain in this movement and invite those who want to join with a welcoming spirit and open arms. Among our honorees, will be former Mayor and a founder of the Free DC movement, Councilmember Marion Barry and grandmother of the statehood movement – Hilda Mason.

We continue to demand: “Free DC! Statehood NOW!”

DC Mayor Dons Free DC Ball Cap

fenty-brown-aide.JPGIt would seem our hard-charging shadow senator, Michael Brown, has gotten Mayor Adrian Fenty to swap his fedora for a Free DC ballcap. Also pictured here is Hellen Matarazzo. Way to go, Mike! Smile
