QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR CANDIDATES FOR DC DELEGATE, US SENATOR AND US REPRESENTATIVE
What goal should the District pursue in terms of democratic rights during the next mayoral term - statehood, voting representation in both houses in Congress, voting representation in one house - or something else? How would you use your office to achieve that goal? Did you support the "DC Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act of 2006" introduced by Representative Tom Davis of Virginia and DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton? Do you currently support this bill or any other pending or proposed legislation regarding DC's status? What specifically have you done in the past to advance the cause of statehood for the District - and how does that compare to the rest of the candidates? Do you regard statehood for the District as primarily a symbolic issue, or one critical to the well-being of the citizens? If the latter, how? List and explain in detail what you feel are the top three ways the lack of statehood effects the everyday lives of the people of DC. How do you plan to address congressional interference in local issues, such as gun regulations, restrictions on taxing commuters, etc.? Would you be willing to engage in civil disobedience for the cause of statehood? Why or why not? More generally, do you think it is more effective to confront Congress on issues of local democracy, or would you adopt a more conciliatory approach?
Would
you lend your office to building and supporting a grassroots
movement to demand statehood for the District? If so, how
specifically would you support such a movement? What other specific actions would you take to advance the cause of statehood for DC? (Incumbents only) Please briefly list what you regard are your most significant achievements while in your current office to advance the cause of DC statehood. |
