PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES QUERIED ON SUPPORT FOR DC STATEHOOD

Candidates for the presidential nomination of the Democratic, Republican and Green parties will be put on the record on whether they support statehood for the District of Columbia, following a letter sent today by the Stand Up! for Democracy in DC Coalition and US Statehood Senator Michael Brown asking them where they stand on the issue. The letter was sent today to all candidates in the three parties with active presidential campaigns.

DC voters should be clear on whether the presidential candidates support statehood for the District of Columbia, said Stand Up! President Anise Jenkins. We want to know preferably before Super Tuesday, Feb. 5 and definitely before our own primary on Feb. 12! Their support for statehood should determine how we vote! We urge all DC residents and their family and friends around the country to call or write to get an answer!

Responses will be posted on Stand Up's! website, www.freedc.org.

Stand Up! also urges individuals to contact the candidates about their views on DC statehood. Below is a list of candidates and their contact information.

The text of the letter is below.

Dear (Candidate):

Do you support statehood for Washington, D.C? And if so, if elected president of the United States, what will you do to achieve full statehood* for the people of the District of Columbia?

Stand Up! for Democracy in DC Coalition is a grass roots nonpartisan organization whose mission is to achieve full civil rights and statehood for the people living in Washington, DC. District of Columbia residents are the only U.S. citizens in the country completely subject to Congressional veto over how we spend our local budget and Congressional veto or change of our local laws. Our local judges and district attorney are neither locally elected or appointed, but selected by the President and Congress. We pay the highest federal taxes per person in the country, yet have no voting representation in the United States House and Senate. Yet, we are subject to many of the responsibilities of states. Most importantly, we DC residents voted for statehood!

Our colonial status has had a tremendous effect on our health care system, our financial standing and other areas of our every-day life.

During this presidential campaign season, Stand Up! has launched a campaign of our own to gain attention to the fact that people living in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., lack the basic civil and human rights that all other American citizens have. The next president of the United States can play a decisive role in helping to end the colonial status of D.C. residents. This is a problem of national and international concern.

Please reply before February 5th - "Super Duper Tuesday". Your answer will help determine our vote for our presidential primary on February 12, 2008. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Anise Jenkins, President

Stand Up! for Democracy in DC Coalition (aka Free DC)

Michael Brown (D-DC)

United States Statehood Senator

  • Full statehood includes local control over our local legislation, local budget, local courts, criminal justice system, and full representation in the U.S. House and Senate.
